Wow, 6 years !

I love the holiday season.

I love the lights, the music, the traditions, the holy reflections, and the FOOD!

However, what I like most is the desire to connect with people you care about.

It’s built into us this time of year to seek out time to converse, reflect, and talk about life with those we hold closest to our hearts.

Last week, I met with one of my closest friends for coffee and I was reflecting on the fact that the MS Gym has been around for 6 years… Wow, 6 years, that’s the longest I have owned and ran any of my successful medical exercise practices.

My buddy, who also has an entrepreneurial heart, asked me, “Do you ever think about doing something else or starting something new?”

After a reflective pause I smiled and said, “No.I may expand what we offer in The MS Gym, but honestly, we are just getting started.”

Seeing the familiar gleam of creative vision in my eye, he smiled back and asked, “What do you mean? What is keeping you so committed, inspired, and excited about the business?”

Here is what I told him:

  1. The MS gym is the canvas I get to paint on. I have spent my life studying movement neurology, strength and conditioning, and behavioral coaching. There is so much more I want to learn, get to learn, and then TEACH to my Gymmers so they can experience relief, freedom, and excitement over counteracting their neurologic symptoms.
  2. I find such a deep sense of purpose and meaning serving my Gymmers. They aren’t just customers or clients to me, they are my family. I made a promise to always serve them and be there for them, and I will fulfill on that promise.
  3. This neurologic patient community is still GREATLY UNDERSERVED. There is a lot of information out there about how to treat and “manage” MS and similar conditions BUT the popular narrative in the medical community to patients is that “you have a progressive condition, there is only so much we can do, don’t set your expectations too high.” This is a FALSE NARRATIVE, it’s just not true, and it’s NOT OK that this ignorant and negligent prognosis is still being spoken. Movement is medicine, people can counteract their symptoms, and you can rewrite your story. Until THAT message becomes the “norm” I will continue to fight and advocate for my community.

  1. I started this online platform so I could spread the good news about the power of movement as medicine to as many people around the world as possible. Now six years in, my mission is to teach, guide, equip, empower and educate people how to design a healing lifestyle that allows them to improve the quality of their life and their health, despite their diagnosis, instead of merely surviving their lifespan and suffering until death.

Then I pulled up our MS Gym membership Facebook group and just started showing and reading the large collection of victory stories that had been posted in just the past week.

As I read and read and read stories of struggles transformed into victory and explained where each of my Gymmers started and why these victory posts are so huge, my friend’s eyes (and mine) filled with tears of emotion and appreciation for the heroes that stood before us.

When we finished reading, my friend took a breath to compose himself, looked at me, and said, “Dude, you are blessed. In a world where the darkness, brokenness, and the sadness of humanity is talked about at nauseum, you get to be a part of a community of people who are defying the odds, fighting for their families, their futures, their lives, and for each other… and winning, together, as a family.”

I responded, “I know man, I know. I have a dream business. I get to guide people out of the darkness and loneliness, watch people encourage and love each other, heal my Lyme disease alongside them, and witness quiet and desperate dreams and prayers come true daily. I literally get to watch hope erupt in the hearts of my Gymmers every day, praise God.”

My buddy smiled and said, “You’re exactly where you need to be bro.”
